severe lumbar damage, July 2002

On July 4, 2002 we had a flood in our home. After lifting heavy wet boxes, clothes, I found my lower back hurting. I went to my doctor and was told that I had a herniated disc at the L-4. It shattered after six months and punctured the sciatic nerve. For four years, I was doing well, until Spring of 2006. My second surgery was not as abrasive as the first, but still bad. Unfortunately, in the Fall of 2007, things got worse. My third surgery, They had to remove the L-4 and L-5 discs and insert two titanium rods and four screws to support my spine. They told me my prognosis is good, but it's a waiting game, for the rest of my life.
It has been very difficult dealing with this. If it weren't for Christopher Reeve and his wonderful campaign for stem cell research and his bravery and strength, I don't think I'd be where I am. He gave me strength and determination to go forward. This is photo of me and my daughter Rachel. She is truly my angel.
