C4-5 Incomplete, May 1995

May 27, 1995 is a day many people still remember. Our son Mike had been in a mountain bike accident and suffered a neck injury, C4-C5 ventilator dependent. He was paralyzed from the neck down. Our family was devastated as a result of his accident. After three months he weaned himself off the ventilator which the doctors could not believe. They said he had been in such good physical condition before the accident and that had really helped him during this time.
Through the years Mike was in constant pain after his accident. After living with the pain and taking numerous pain medications he was having a pain pump implanted in his side. While in the hospital for this surgery, he died from an infection on August 26, 2003.

Mike lived eight years and three months after his injury, and always hoped for a cure for paralysis. Prior to his accident, he was a very active person living life to its fullest.

May 27, 1995 was the day Mike was injured. You may remember that day as Christopher Reeve was injured on the very same day.
